Solo Ads vs Facebook Ads: Which Builds an Email List Faster?
Solo ads or Facebook ads for list building? A side-by-side comparison, when each one wins, and a 14-day test to settle it with your own numbers.

For a make money online, affiliate or business opportunity offer, solo ads usually build a list faster and with less setup, because the people clicking already read emails about those topics. Facebook ads win when you need precise targeting, a niche outside the solo ad world, or traffic you can scale for months. Many marketers use both.
I sell solo ads, so I have a bias. I'll tell you where Facebook is the better choice too.
The main differences
| | Solo ads | Facebook ads | |---|---|---| | How you pay | Per unique click, price agreed upfront | Auction, cost changes every day | | Setup time | Send a link, traffic starts within about a day | Account, pixel, creatives, audiences, ad review | | Who sees it | Subscribers of one email list | People Facebook's algorithm picks | | Best niches | Make money online, affiliate, biz-op, coaching | Almost any niche | | Risk of ad account ban | None | Real, especially for income-related offers | | Targeting | Country and list topic | Interests, age, behaviour, lookalikes | | Scale | Limited by the vendor's list size | Very large | | Testing cost | Fixed: e.g. 100 clicks | Variable: you pay while the algorithm learns |
When are solo ads the better choice?
- Your offer is about making money online, affiliate marketing or a business opportunity.
- You want leads this week, not after two weeks of ad testing.
- You've had ads rejected or accounts restricted on Facebook. Income-related offers get flagged often.
- You want a fixed cost you know before you start.
When is Facebook the better choice?
- Your niche is outside the solo ad world: fitness, parenting, local services, ecommerce.
- You need precise targeting by age, interest or job.
- You've found a winning ad and want to spend more every month.
- You have time and budget to test creatives before you see results.
What about lead quality?
Both can bring good and bad leads. With solo ads, quality depends on the vendor's list and how the clicks are filtered. With Facebook, it depends on your targeting, your ad and where the ad is shown.
The fair way to compare is your own numbers. Send both sources to the same page for a week, then compare cost per lead, the percentage who open your first three emails, and sales after 14 days.
How to test both without wasting money
- Use one capture page and one follow-up sequence for both sources, so the only difference is the traffic.
- Tag every lead by source in your autoresponder.
- Spend a similar amount on each: for example, a 300-click solo ad and the same budget on Facebook.
- After 14 days compare cost per lead, email opens and sales per source.
- Put most of next month's budget on the winner, and keep testing the other with a small amount.
Can solo ads and Facebook ads work together?
Yes. A common setup: solo ads fill the list quickly, and the Facebook pixel on your capture page records every solo ad visitor. Later you can show Facebook ads only to people who visited but didn't opt in, which is usually a cheap audience.
FAQ
Are solo ads cheaper than Facebook ads?
It depends on your niche and offer. Solo ads have a known price per click upfront. Facebook costs change with the auction and your ad quality. For make money online offers, solo ads are often the easier start because those offers struggle with Facebook's ad rules.
Is solo ad traffic allowed to go to any page?
Most vendors only accept capture pages with a free offer. Sending cold email traffic straight to a sales page converts poorly, and many vendors will refuse it.
Which should a beginner start with?
If you're in the make money online or affiliate space and already have a capture page and follow-up emails, a small solo ad order is the quicker test. If you're in another niche, start with Facebook.
